About Groundswell Counseling
Why the name Groundswell? As a life-long surfer I have always been fascinated by the distance that waves travel across the planet, shape shifting along the way as they build momentum towards their destination and finally break on the sand. To me, groundswell is an image of momentum and a reminder that change is always possible.
At Groundswell Counseling I invite you to consider where and how change is possible in your life, within your community and across the planet. Make waves.
“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”
— President Barack Obama

Guiding Principles
Antiracism and Queer Liberation Theory are the foundational pillars of Groundswell Counseling. Antiracism opposes all forms of systemic racism. Antiracism supports antiracist policy through actions and antiracist ideas (IXK).
Queer liberation recognizes and honors a diverse spectrum of sexual orientations and gender identities beyond the gender binary. Queer liberation empowers people to be authentic and share their story. Queer liberation encourages engagement in growth fostering relationships within community.
I believe that helping people not get erased in our society is a form of advocacy. I believe that authenticity is a form of advocacy. And I believe that helping people develop identity self-awareness, irradiate all forms of internalized oppression, and live their lives “out of the closet” is a form of advocacy.
Professional Memberships & Ethical Guidelines
I hold active memberships with the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP). Best practices and ethical codes from the American Counseling Association (ACA), AASP, and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health Standards of Care, version 8 (SOC) guide my ethical decision making and assessments.
Advocacy & Affiliations
I am passionate about LGBTQIA+ advocacy in the world of sports. I have spoken on the topics of LGBTQ+ inclusion, athlete mental health and mental performance at several notable conferences including the Pac-12 Health Equity Summit, the Human Rights Campaign’s Time to Thrive Conference, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Convention, and the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) Conference. I co-authored a publication for the AASP Newsletter titled Inclusive and Affirming Support for Transgender and Gender-Nonconforming Athletes.
As a former collegiate and professional athlete, I have also served as a consultant for several LGBTQIA+ advocacy organizations including the Sports Equality Foundation, Athlete Ally, and the Trevor Project. I currently volunteer as an Educational Program Leader for the Sports Equality Foundation.
I also facilitate Out Boulder’s SOFFA (Supporting Transgender Family and Friends) Support Group twice a month on the 2nd & 4th Mondays, 7-8pm MT via Zoom. To learn more information, please visit Out Boulder’s website here.
Experience in Sports
I played collegiate volleyball for UC Santa Barbara were I was named NCAA division 1 All-American and led the Gauchos to the elite eight of the NCAA tournament twice. After college, I went on to play volleyball professionally in Slovenia and the Netherlands. Between playing, coaching and consulting, I have over 20 years of volleyball experience working with youth, collegiate, professional, and national federation volleyball teams throughout the US, Europe and Central America. I am an independent mental performance consultant with USA Volleyball’s National Team Development Program (NTDP), and have worked with several NCAA collegiate athletes and teams in volleyball, soccer, softball, baseball, tennis, track, cross country and lacrosse.
Personal
I am from California but reside in Denver, Colorado with my wife Hannah and dog Stevie Budd. I enjoy traveling, camping and skiing in the Rocky Mountains, and surfing when I can get to a beach. Quality time with friends over good food, gardening, listening to live music and reading fantasy books are how I like to spend my free time.
I have always been a social worker at heart. Prior to pursuing a career in counseling, I lived in Nicaragua for 9+ years learning spanish, surfing and leading community service trips for collegiate volleyball teams. While living in Central America I raised over $125k for NGOs in Nicaragua and founded a non-profit organization called The Casa Llanta Fund. The Casa Llanta Fund is dedicated to combating social and economic injustice in Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Puerto Rico. The mission is to empower marginalized communities by expanding access to sports, education, employment.
